William Floyd High School star student athlete and track and field/cross country phenom Zariel Macchia continues to outpace her competition, winning her seventh overall state crown at the New York State Indoor Track & Field Championships last Saturday at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island! In the 3,000-meter run, she placed first and set a new national-best time of 9:21.73!
Zariel, who was initially disqualified from the final indoor track race of her high school career due to a technicality in a February race involving college student athletes, overcame a court battle to ensure a chance to compete in the state championships.
She didn’t let the opportunity go to waste by winning the 3,000-meter event and setting the new U.S. No. 1 time. This was the second consecutive indoor track & field state championship after securing the title in the 1,000-meter run last year.
In addition to winning an individual state championship, Zariel also won a team championship in the 4,000-meter distance medley relay. Teaming up with three of Suffolk County’s best runners, Zariel ran the 1,500-meter anchor leg in the race and helped Suffolk County reign supreme over several teams from across New York State. She also competed in the 1,000-meter run and finished in third place, with her final time of 2:46.95 coming within just milliseconds of second place.
Zariel and her teammates will compete at the Nike Indoor Nationals track and field competition this upcoming weekend at The Armory in New York City. Zariel will run in the 5K and the mile, as well as the 1,600-sprint medley relay with teammates Samantha Seaman, Allana Morgan and Angelle Sainteus. Additionally, Coral Macchia, a seventh grader, will be competing in the middle school mile.
Congratulations to Zariel on this amazing accomplishment and good luck to all William Floyd competitors this weekend!
