The William Floyd School District Athletic Department is pleased to announce the 14th Class of Hall of Fame honorees, which includes four individual athletes, a coach and a championship team, for exhibiting excellence and sportsmanship throughout their time representing William Floyd athletics. This year’s induction class will be honored at halftime of the Saturday, February 3, boys’ varsity basketball home game against Walt Whitman beginning at 12 pm.
This year’s class of honorees includes Amber Birchwell, soccer, Class of 2017; Stacey Bedell, football, Class of 2012; Stephen Filosa, basketball, Class of 1994; and Dave Greco, cross country/track and field, Class of 1974; along with the 2007 Long Island Championship football team, and the team’s former and longtime defensive coordinator, Gil DeCicco. “This year’s class of honorees exemplifies William Floyd pride and excellence,” said Kevin M. Coster, superintendent of schools, William Floyd School District. “Their achievements have left a legacy on William Floyd athletics, which serves as a benchmark for current and future student-athletes to achieve.”
Following a meet-and-greet reception, the newly-inducted Hall of Famers will enjoy the boys’ varsity basketball game and be introduced at halftime and have their bios read to the crowd in attendance to cheer on the first-place Colonials.
“Congratulations to this year’s class of honorees,” said Brian Babst, athletic director, William Floyd School District, and also a member of the William Floyd Athletic Hall of Fame. “From the championship football team, to Coach DeCicco and all four individual athletes, their knowledge, athletic ability and sportsmanship throughout their time at William Floyd, makes them truly deserving of this honor.”
To be considered for the individual honor, nominees must be alumni of William Floyd High School and have exhibited both excellence and sportsmanship during their time as a William Floyd student athlete. The biennial Hall of Fame induction ceremony is designed to recognize former outstanding student-athletes and role models of the past while strengthening the bonds between the community, the district and its alumni. This year’s class joins the ranks of 78 individual athletes, 12 team award recipients, eight coaches, seven community award recipients, and an honorary award recipient.
