Members of the William Floyd community recently came together to support the St. Baldrick’s Foundation for childhood cancer research by participating in the second consecutive “Brave the Shave” event at William Floyd Elementary School! William Floyd administrators, faculty, staff and students all volunteered to say goodbye to their hair – for now – to raise money toward the noble work being done by St. Baldrick’s! The William Floyd Elementary School students who attended the assembly were also given the opportunity to dye their hair green, get their hair braided with green ribbons and receive green hair extensions as an additional show of support.

Students from William Floyd High School’s Barbering Academy, under the direction of Ms. Cara Cliffe, helped shave and dye the hair of volunteers while students from the high school’s junior cosmetology class, under the direction of Ms. Brittany Antici, helped with the hair extensions and braids.

In addition to the many volunteers that came from the William Floyd School District, there were also several volunteers from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department at the event, including Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr., who had a shamrock painted on the side of his head to show his support for the cause. Sheriff Toulon also recognized Rayna, the daughter of a WFE faculty member who has been battling pediatric cancer, as the youngest-ever recipient of his monthly Community Leadership Award, honoring her courage and determination in facing the disease. Rayna was the guest of honor at last year’s event.

Rayna, with the help of her sister, shared her story with all of the faculty, staff, students and community members in attendance to educate them on the subject of childhood cancer and thank them for their support, while members of her family volunteered to participate in the shave. Also present was Dr. Rina Meyer, MD, an expert in Pediatric Hematology Oncology at Stony Brook Medicine’s Cancer Center, who provided insights into the fight against childhood cancer.

Through the willingness of the volunteers to shave their hair, on-site t-shirt sales and online donations, the William Floyd community has raised nearly $2,000 and counting for St. Baldrick’s this year! Those who are interested in donating can still do so by following this link.

Special thanks to the William Floyd Elementary School principal Dr. Keith Fasciana, the William Floyd Elementary School community, the CTE Barbering and Cosmetology Academies and all of those who “Braved the Shave” or donated to St. Baldrick’s for helping make this event such a success!
