Starting at a new school, and at a new level, can be stressful for students, however, William Floyd Middle School has found a way to alleviate some of that pressure with help from the school’s Student Ambassador Program!

The WFMS Student Ambassador Program, similar to the William Paca Middle School Bridge Crew, is centered around a group of middle school student-leaders who serve as a dedicated welcoming committee for new entrants, whether moving up or moving in. At the beginning of the school year, Student Ambassadors guide new students around the building, walk them to their classes on their first day, lead tours for incoming fifth-grade students each spring and provide assistance during orientation and at various school events throughout the school year.

“Transitioning to a new school can be overwhelming,” said WFMS school counselor Taylor Connor, who has advised the Student Ambassadors for six years and counting. “Our Student Ambassadors help ease that transition by offering a warm welcome and peer support. Their leadership plays an important role in building a caring and connected school community.”

To participate in the Student Ambassador program, students must either submit an application or be nominated by a teacher. Additionally, potential participants must maintain an 85 or above grade point average, be in good behavioral standing and consistently demonstrate the 3 Rs of PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) – being respectful, responsible and ready to learn. Students who meet the criteria, then complete a training session focused on developing their leadership skills and the best ways to help new students.

Student Ambassadors have several meetings throughout the school year to prepare for big events, such as fifth-grade visits, and to further develop their ability to lead and support their peers in meaningful ways. Through participation in this program, students build a sense of camaraderie among their fellow student ambassadors as well as the new students they are assisting.

With more students stepping up to become Student Ambassadors each year, the school environment has become increasingly welcoming for new students. Their efforts have made an undeniably positive impact on the school community, as students know who they can turn to if they are ever in need of a helping hand!
