Kyle Maurelli, a biology teacher at William Floyd Middle School, has been selected as the Science Teachers Association of New York State (STANYS) Middle Level Science Teacher of the Year for Suffolk County!

Mr. Maurelli joins an elite group of science educators who, as outstanding classroom teachers, are involved in initiatives that advance science education both inside and outside of the classroom.

“I am incredibly honored to be selected as the STANYS Middle School Science Teacher of the Year for Suffolk County,” said Mr. Maurelli. “This recognition means so much to me because it reflects the type of educator I strive to be every day; the teacher and role model I wish I had when I was a student. I work to create a classroom environment where all students feel accepted, comfortable, and inspired to explore the world around them through curiosity, creativity, and hands-on learning.”

Mr. Maurelli, who is in his fifth year teaching at William Floyd, also serves as the advisor for the Animal Science Club, a group that has partnered with the New York Marine Rescue Center and Canon, to adopt, rehabilitate and chronicle the journey of “Floyd” the seal. “It is our sincere belief that your district is indeed fortunate to have such a fine teacher on your staff,” wrote Brian Vorwald, STANYS Awards Committee co-chairperson and past president, in a letter to Ms. Camelle Person, principal, William Floyd Middle School, informing her of Mr. Maurelli’s recognition. “Kyle has promoted the enhancement of science education with distinction and has earned the respect of his colleagues.”

Mr. Maurelli added, “For me, science is about more than content; it is about building confidence, helping students realize their potential, and empowering them to make an impact on the ever-changing world around them. I am incredibly grateful to my students, colleagues, and the William Floyd community for supporting and believing in the work we do together."

Congratulations, Mr. Maurelli!
