William Floyd High School students in Ms. Karisa Beyer’s senior cosmetology class recently hosted officers from the Suffolk County Police Department 7th Precinct for complimentary salon services! It was an exciting day for the students, as they got to demonstrate the skills they have been learning as part of the Cosmetology program by styling the officers’ hair with blowouts, braids and curls. This unique collaboration gave the cosmetology students a great opportunity to work with real clients and to get to know the local, hardworking police officers within their community.  “A huge thank you to the 7th Precinct, especially Deputy Police Commissioner Belinda Alvarez-Groneman, for their continued support and partnership with our students and the Cosmetology program,” said Ms. Beyer.

The William Floyd Cosmetology Academy is a part of the district’s award-winning Career and Technical Education (CTE) program and offers a two-year Cosmetology licensing course. The 1,000-hour New York State licensing course includes instruction and practical experience in hairstyling, hair coloring, haircutting, skin care, nail technology, make-up, braiding, chemical texturizing and hair extensions. The program also includes visits by guest speakers, industry shows and other events. William Floyd High School’s state-of-the-art cosmetology classroom uses the same equipment and materials found in a professional salon. Successful completion of the program qualifies students to apply for the New York State Cosmetology written and practical exams.
