John Melandro, a fifth-grade teacher at Tangier Smith Elementary School and a Milken Educator Award recipient, was recently profiled by the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) for his efforts to incorporate magic into his lessons and using it as a learning tool to spark mystery and curiosity in the classroom.

“I believe that teaching is magic because it’s a gift and an opportunity every single day to walk in the classroom and be able to influence, motivate, engage and inspire students and affect them in a positive way,” said Mr. Melandro, who is also a member of the William Floyd United Teachers.

In October 2024, Mr. Melandro was selected to receive the prestigious Milken Educator Award, a national honor that recognizes exceptional educators for their dedication to excellence in teaching. The award is hailed as the “Oscar of Education” and came with a $25,000 cash award and lifelong connections and opportunities with a community of exceptional educators from across the nation.
