Tangier Smith Elementary School fifth-grade students recently received a sneak peek at the great opportunities that await them in high school through collaborations with the William Floyd High School Cosmetology and Barbering academies, part of the award-winning Career and Technology Education program!

Senior cosmetology students from Karisa Beyer’s class recently visited Tangier Smith to give the fifth-grade classes a demonstration on hair-braiding techniques. Cosmetology students demonstrated braiding and styling techniques such as three strand, four strand, French, Dutch, rope, fishtail and waterfall braids. After observing, many of the fifth graders began to practice the techniques on mannequins. Some of the fifth-grade students even got hair tinsel and braids added to their own hair!

“Our seniors were excited to share their experiences in the program with the students,” said Ms. Beyer. “The Tangier Smith fifth graders had some great follow-up questions about the program and are excited for the future in potentially joining the award-winning Cosmetology program!”

Then, to continue this partnership, Tangier Smith fifth-grade classes visited the Barbering Academy. Under the direction of Cara Cliffe and CTE students, elementary students learned about haircuts, shampooing and manicures, as well as the myriad skills that are required to become a successful barber. Students were also introduced to box-braiding and other twists.

This collaboration provides a fun, educational experience for all students involved and provides the elementary school students a preview of opportunities that the high school CTE programs have to offer.
