Students in Ms. Romero and Ms. Worontsoff’s class at Tangier Smith Elementary celebrated Patriot’s Day in their classroom. Students identified the characteristics that make someone a hero and remembered the heroes who were lost on Sept. 11, 2001.
The William Floyd School District recognized Patriot Day on September 11, 2023, the 22nd anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center. Schools focused on age-appropriate history and projects around the event and many of the elementary school students dressed in red, white and blue to mark the occasion.
Mrs. Pon-Johnson’s fourth-grade class at Moriches Elementary School is pictured holding their 9/11 artwork. They completed it after they read the book "The Man with the Red Bandana," the story of a man, Welles Crowther, who saved as many as 18 lives during the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
