At Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School, the staff, parents and community work together with one common goal: student academic, social and emotional growth. We believe that the home is every child’s first learning experience and parents are the child’s first and permanent teachers. Long before New York State regulation 100.11   mandated including parents in the decision–making processes in the school, Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School recognized the value of parent involvement. Since the 2002/2003 school year, parents have been invited to be a part of the school’s Title Parent Involvement Committee and our Parent Teacher Organization. Through participation in these groups, parents are afforded a voice in helping to shape the decisions that are made to provide their children with programs and protocols that aide in their children’s academic, social and emotional growth.

Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School continues to work cooperatively with the William Floyd UPK Program to create parent involvement activities and build a community of support for the education of student’s pre-k through elementary grades. In addition, we will work with other community resources, such as the community library, to encourage and support parents in more fully participating in the education of their children.

Listed below are several ways that we will continue to foster the home-school connection and maximize student achievement:

• We will convene an annual meeting, at a convenient time, to which all parents of participating children shall be invited and encouraged to attend, to inform parents of their school's participation under this part and to explain the requirements of this part, and the right of the parents to be involved
• We will offer a flexible number of meetings, such as meetings in the morning or evening, and may provide, with funds provided under this part, transportation, child care, or home visits, as such services relate to parental involvement
• We will involve parents, in an organized, ongoing, and timely way, in the planning, review, and improvement of programs under this part, including the planning, review, and improvement of the school parental involvement policy
• We will provide parents of participating children timely information about programs, a description and explanation of the curriculum in use at the school, the forms of academic assessment used to measure student progress, and the proficiency levels students are expected to meet; and if requested by parents, opportunities for regular meetings to formulate suggestions and to participate, as appropriate, in decisions relating to the education of their children, and respond to any such suggestions as soon as practicably possible
• Children do best when parents are enabled to play four key roles: as teachers, as advisors, as advocates and as decision-makers. Parents are encouraged to participate in all these roles in school and at home to promote each child’s personal and academic growth
• The Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School Title I Parent Involvement Committee will provide materials and training to help parents work with their children to improve their academic achievement. We will provide literacy and mathematical training, and training on the use of technology, etc. in order to encourage and foster parent involvement
• The school welcomes parents, and together with our P.T.O., actively recruits parent volunteers to play an integral part in the collaboration of ideas and activities to ensure student growth and academic success
• Open communication between home and school is essential in meeting students’ needs. Pertinent information is shared in a variety of ways: on the district website which includes the parent portal and Google Site, our Parent Compact which clearly lists parents and school responsibilities, the Nathaniel Woodhull School Improvement Plan, P.T.O meetings, parent workshops, committee meetings and parent-teacher conferences
• Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School will provide assistance to parents/families to help them understand the Next Generation State Standards and student performance reporting systems. In addition, Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School will provide parents with NYS Assessment data reports, NWEA, tri-annual report cards and Academic Intervention Service progress reports when applicable
• Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School will empower teachers, support services, administration and staff to work together with parents as partners to develop, implement, and coordinate parent programs which foster a partnership between parents and Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School
• Parents/families will be offered the opportunity to voice complaints directly to the building Principal followed by a meeting with the Superintendent of Schools or the Title 1/ESSA Coordinator
• Alignment and communication with our Universal Pre-K program will ensure a smooth transition for incoming kindergarten students

At Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School, greater family involvement in children’s learning is a critical link to achieving a high-quality education and a safe, disciplined learning environment for every student.
