On Monday, August 15, members of the Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School Community Cares Club along with their advisor Kayla Schweers, school principal Dr. Heather Murillo and assistant principal Erica Peralta, delivered a $2,300 check to the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office raised through the club’s “Coins for K9s” collection drive held last spring. This collection, benefiting the Sheriff’s Foundation, was held in honor of P.J. Fusaro, a 2012 William Floyd High School graduate who passed away in 2020. P.J., who loved dogs and dreamed of becoming a K-9 deputy sheriff, was the son of Donna Fusaro, a teaching assistant at Nathaniel Woodhull. For their efforts, Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr. and Dr. Dominic Marino of the Sheriff’s Foundation presented the Community Cares Club with a certificate of appreciation.

In addition to Coins for K9s, the Community Cares Club hosts various efforts to serve their community such as the “Share the Warmth Drive” to collect mittens, scarves and hats for residents in need during the winter months, food drives to benefit the local food pantry and making cards of encouragement for healthcare workers at Long Island Community Hospital.

Special thanks to John S. Hobart Elementary School and William Floyd High School for partnering with Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School on this worthy endeavor.
