At Moriches Elementary School, the staff, parents and community work together with one common goal: student achievement. We believe that the home is every child’s first learning experience and parents are the child’s first and permanent teachers. Since 1989, parents have been a part of the school’s Shared Decision Making team which is responsible for writing and evaluating the action plan for the school each year.

Moriches Elementary will plan and coordinate the provision of materials and training in order to assist parents in working with their children to improve their academic growth and achievement. Children do best when parents are enabled to play four key roles: as teachers, as advisors, as advocates and as decision-makers. At Moriches Elementary, parents are encouraged to participate in all these roles in school and at home to promote each child’s personal and academic growth. We will offer a flexible number of meetings, such as meetings in the morning or evening, and may provide, with funds provided under this part, transportation, child care, or home visits, as necessary. These meetings and workshops will be held in order to assist and foster parent involvement. The school welcomes parents and together with our P.T.O., actively recruits parent volunteers.

Moriches Elementary will provide assistance to parents in understanding New York State Common Core State Standards/Next Generation State Standards and Assessments. Administrators and teachers will work with parents in developing understanding of student achievement standards along with local assessments, monitoring student progress and growth. Together we will collaborate and work together to improve student achievement.

Moriches Elementary will:

  • Convene meetings, as needed, to which all parents of participating children shall be invited and encouraged to attend, to inform parents of their school's participation under this part and to explain the requirements of this part, and the right of the parents to be involved

  • Involve parents, in an organized, ongoing, and timely way, in the planning, review, and improvement of programs under this part, including the planning, review, and improvement of the school parental involvement policy

  • Provide parents of participating children timely information about programs, a description and explanation of the curriculum in use at the school, the forms of academic assessment used to measure student progress, and the proficiency levels students are expected to meet; and if requested by parents, opportunities for regular meetings to formulate suggestions and to participate, as appropriate, in decisions relating to the education of their children, and respond to any such suggestions as soon as practicably possible.

  • Jointly develop with parents a school-parent compact which outlines how parents, staff and students will share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement. The compact will: a) describe the school’s responsibility in providing a high-quality curriculum, instruction which supports student needs, and an effective learning environment that enables students to meet the State’s student academic achievement standards; and the ways in which each parent will be responsible for supporting their children’s learning, and b) address the importance of communication between teachers and parents on an ongoing basis.

  • Build capacity for parent involvement by ensuring effective involvement of parents and to support a partnership between Moriches Elementary, parents and the community in order to improve student academic achievement. We will: a) provide assistance to parents in understanding topics such as the Common Core State Standards/Next Generation State Standards in Literacy and Mathematics, New York State Assessments, and how to monitor a child’s progress and work with educators to improve the achievement of their children; b) provide materials and training to help parents work with their children to improve their academic achievement and use technology as appropriate to foster parent involvement; c) Value the contributions of parents and community by reaching out and communicating with parents as equal partners, implementing and coordinating parent programs, and building ties between parents and Moriches Elementary; d) ensure information is provided to parents in a format and to the extent practicable, in a language that parents can understand; e) Plan meetings at a variety of times in order to maximize parental involvement and participation.

  •  Moriches Elementary will work with our Universal Pre-K program to encourage and support parents in their transition into Kindergarten. Working with community resources such as the community library, we will encourage and support parents so they are able to more fully participate in the education of their children.

  • Provide equal opportunities for participation of all parents including parents with Limited English proficiency, parents with disabilities, and parents with migratory children including providing information and student progress reports.
