Four William Floyd High School senior student-artists - James Start, Bella Humberstone, Kamiyah Rose and Madison Orlando - recently had their artwork chosen for display at the annual Suffolk County Art Leaders Association (SCALA) All-County & Senior Scholarship art show! This event recognizes more than 50 talented student-artists throughout Suffolk County with “All-County” designations and a chance to win one monetary prizes and scholarships. The reception took place on February 7, with the artwork displayed at Babylon Town Hall through early March.

Pictured above are the three pieces of original artwork that earned James Start a $500 scholarship award from SCALA!

Bella Humberstone's piece from "The Wizard's Journal" is pictured at the SCALA All-County & Senior Scholarship art show with an honorable mention ribbon around it.

James Start was one of the three senior student-artists who was chosen as a SCALA scholarship winner! He won the second-place scholarship worth $500 after submitting three pieces of his artwork and writing an essay based upon the prompt, “What impact would you like your artwork to have?”

“His illustrations are humorous and sophisticated, such as in the piece, “No Loitering,” said Theresa Bianco, Fine Arts chairperson, William Floyd School District. “His detailed still-life displayed his keen eye for detail and ability to manipulate charcoal and pastel.” All three of James’s pieces were displayed at the exhibition alongside a ribbon that signified him as a scholarship winner.

Bella Humberstone also earned All-County honors and won the All-County Honorable Mention award for one of her dynamic and detailed illustrations from a collection of works, titled “The Wizard’s Journal.” This collection features many illustrations of original, mythical creatures that Bella created in support of the high school’s fall drama production of Puffs, a play based upon the universe in the Harry Potter book series.

Kamiyah Rose was also named an All-County artist for her charcoal drawing titled, “Still Learning,” which depicts the wonder and curiosity of a young girl learning about the celebration of Kwanzaa.

Madison Orlando was William Floyd’s fourth and final All-County artist who was selected for her charcoal and pastel drawing titled, “Answering the Unknown,” which shows a detailed crime scene and encapsulates a cold and somber mood.

Congratulations to James, Bella, Kamiyah and Madison for their excellent achievements in the arts!
