Eighth-grade Portfolio Art students from William Floyd Middle School and William Paca Middle School recently visited William Floyd High School to take a tour of the high school art classes! This is an annual collaboration that gives the eighth-grade students the opportunity to see what the high school art classes are like while also interacting with current students and teachers.

“It’s a great introduction to our arts program and the goal is to get students excited about the various electives that the Art Department has to offer,” said Theresa Bianco, chairperson, Fine Arts, William Floyd School District.

The day began with a meet-and-greet session between the eighth-grade students and senior art students at the high school, who shared their experiences and pieces of artwork they created. They discussed materials they learned to use throughout their elective courses. They discussed course offerings including Photography, Fashion Design, Fashion & Costume Construction, Drawing, Illustration and Graphic Design.  

After the meet-and-greet, the eighth graders began their tour of the art classrooms, visiting classes such as Animatronics & Creative Design, Ceramics, Photography and Studio in Art. This tour gave them the opportunity to learn from the high school students by either talking to them directly or by observing the kind of work they do in their respective art classes while meeting some of their future teachers. The eighth-grade students also participated in some hands-on workshops in which they could either create miniature animatronic bugs or try their hand at the art of printmaking!

By the end of the day, all of the eighth graders gained valuable new insights on the art opportunities that await them in the future!
