The William Floyd boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams are back in the playoffs! Both teams of student-athletes are currently among the best in their respective divisions and are set to compete in the Section XI playoffs this February. This will be the fifth consecutive season in which both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams qualified for the playoffs.

The boys’ varsity team, led by head coach Will Slinkosky, boasts a 16-1 overall record and just secured their fourth consecutive League I championship with a 14-0 League I record! The Colonials have finished as the League I champion in each of the last four seasons, shattering the previous program record, and are on an active stretch of 53 consecutive League I wins, which is yet another program record! Their League I championship ensures that the road to the final four runs through Mastic Beach.

The Colonials are led by the senior duo of Sharod Sutton and JJ Smith, two returning starters from last year’s team who were also Newsday top 100 selections for the 2025-26 season. Sharod has a team-high average of 14 points per game while also making a substantial impact as a passer and rebounder. JJ is second on the team with an average of 13 points per game and is one of the team’s biggest three-point threats. Coach Slinkosky also highlighted both players as strong defenders for the team. Seniors Ja’Quan Thomas and Jesse Durham have both made a big impact this season. Ja’Quan averages 10 points per game and is a key rebounder for the Colonials while Jesse is a productive shooter who averages 8 points per game.

The Colonials’ roster also includes: seniors Evan Commodore, Josiah Wade and Naz Williams; sophomores Kyren Duff, Curtis Edwards, Daniil Ufimskiy and Gavin Winters; and freshmen Da'Vonte Medlock, Collin Smith and Robbie Thomas. The team’s assistant coaches are Thomas Stines and Harrison Bak.

The Colonials have three regular season games left on the regular season – away at Bay Shore on January 30, hosting Brentwood on February 3, and visiting Southampton on February 7.

The girls’ varsity team, led by head coach Rich Sinclair, has a 14-3 overall record and an 11-2 League I record this season. Like the boys’ team, they continue to make William Floyd history as their now five-year playoff streak is the longest in program history by a two-year margin! The Colonials have been flourishing in large part due to their influx of highly talented, young players and are well on their way to earning at least one home playoff game.

Their leading scorer is junior Savannah Pantry, who earned Newsday top 100 honors for the 2025-26 season and is currently averaging a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds per game while also serving as the team’s leader in blocks. Second in scoring is Taleah Coppola, a freshman who is already on her second year playing varsity after starting as an eighth grader last year. She averages 12 points per game and is also the team leader in assists and steals. The lineup is further bolstered by sophomore Milania Farrow, who averages 11 points per game, and junior Chloe Campbell, a multiple time Newsday top 100 selection who is one of the team’s top rebounders and shot blockers.

Additionally, the Colonials have been getting significant contributions from first-year varsity player Gabrielle Bell Eleazer, who is just a seventh grader. She is averaging 8 points per game and was highlighted by Newsday earlier this season for her standout defensive effort that helped lead the Colonials to an overtime win against Ward Melville.

The Colonials’ roster also includes: seniors Jana Aly, Helen Lin and Vinte’ya Rountree; juniors London Barnes, Jewlianna Brown, Rosie Micucci, Jayla Thomas and Caiden Widecki; and freshmen Gizelle Edwards and J.J. Stewart. The team’s assistant coaches are Robert Hodgson and Nicholas Thomas.

The Colonials have three regular season games left on the regular season – hosting Bay Shore on January 30, away at Brentwood on February 3, and home against Walt Whitman Southampton on February 4.

Congratulations to all of the coaches and student-athletes on both teams and best of luck throughout the rest of the season and into the playoffs!
