William Floyd High School junior and talented student-artist Hailey Green has been selected to have her artwork grace the cover of this year’s William Floyd High School yearbook, a rare feat for an 11^th grader to accomplish. Hailey is also the William Floyd “Artist of the Month” for December!

This year’s theme for the yearbook cover competition was “Heroes, Myths and Legends,” which tasked students to come up with an original work for judging by seniors and school employees. Hailey, who enjoys working in various mediums, created her submission in colored pencils. Her work included mythical creatures such as dragons and winged horses, representing teachers, who helped students pass various trials along the way. In the distance, you can see students celebrating near a large building representing the graduation milestone. She also wanted to ensure that the cover was bright and colorful and featured people smiling and united.

“No matter what challenge or material, Hailey rises to the occasion to create something beautiful,” said Erika Licausi, Hailey’s William Floyd High School Fashion I and Fashion II teacher. “She is not afraid to step out of her comfort zone.”

In addition to the yearbook cover, Hailey created two large murals for last year’s senior prom, has received various accolades for her work including multiple distinguished designations on her portfolio and had her artwork selected for the cover of the William Floyd faculty and staff holiday greeting card.

“What makes Hailey exceptional is not only her talent and passion for art, but her willingness to help and share her art with the school community and everyone around her,” said Theresa Bianco, Hailey’s Portfolio Prep teacher and chairperson of fine arts for the William Floyd School District. “She always wants to be part of whatever we offer here at William Floyd and wants to make a difference every day when she steps into our school, her first words are always, ‘do you need help?’"

William Floyd High School is one of the few remaining districts on Long Island that still uses student artwork for its yearbook cover.

Hailey would like to pursue a career in the arts in the future and is considering attending the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) after graduation in June 2023. At William Floyd High School, Hailey serves as the vice president of the National Art Honor Society, is a member of Student Government, and, the award-winning Youth & Government program. Hailey has attended William Floyd schools K-11 – first attending Tangier Smith Elementary School, then William Paca Middle School and now William Floyd High School.
