At Tangier Smith Elementary School, the first grade community
(teachers, students and parents) are involved in a very innovative, and unique experience. 

The students in Mrs. Markewitz's class have had the opportunity to pilot the use of an Interactive White Board.  The students receive classroom instruction with the board including interactive websites and teacher created programs to help enhance learning. 

In turn, first grade parents volunteer during the week to work with all 130 first grade students to set up the computer lab in the center of Pod 1 so that these first graders can utilize this technology. 

Students are assisted in curriculum related computer activities on wireless laptops.  This experience is teaching computer literacy at an early age and promoting independence as we prepare our children for a technocratic society.
