“The positive response from parents and students has been very rewarding. Many community members have expressed how pleasant and upbeat it was to participate in a free event with their children. This enjoyable evening was a perfect kickoff to New York State’s Foreign Language Week, March 6-12, 2011,” states Mariann Coogan, Chairperson of the Foreign Language Department
On Thursday, March 3, 2011 the diversity of the William Floyd community was celebrated when over 300 students and their families attended our first ever G.I.F.T. night (Global Interactive Fun Time) at the high school. The Foreign Language and English as a Second Language (ESL) Departments along with the Foreign Language Honor Society collaborated in offering a variety of cultural activities. Middle school and high school foreign language teachers involved community participants in creating Italian and Mardi Gras masks, trying their luck at BINGO in Spanish and Italian, sampling a variety of foods, and dancing to Latin music while displays of student work adorned the rotunda and student created videos played in the LGI. The William Floyd ESL students proudly shared power point presentations of their native countries, and were clearly delighted that their participation was an integral part of the evening.
