1st Grade – Kevin Ohlsen (Mrs. Cioffi’s Class) – WHICH SOIL WILL A SEED GROW IN BETTER? – Problem – Will plants grow in different types of soils?

2nd Grade – Makayla Hampson (Mrs. Leary’s Class) – HOT AIR BALLOON? – Problem – Will a smaller or larger balloon float longer when filled with hot air?

3rd Grade – Robert Reilly (Mrs. Carriero’s Class) – PREDICTING WEATHER – Problem – What is the most accurate way to predict the weather without using advanced technology, like satellites and computers.

4th Grade – Anthony Hristidis (Mrs. Haakonson’s Class) – SHOCKING FRUIT AND ELECTRIFYING VEGETABLES – Problem – Will certain fruits and vegetables produce electrical volts and if so, will it be enough to power a flashlight bulb?

5th Grade – Thomas Panicola (Ms. Coulon’s Class) – BURN BABY BURN – Problem – How will color affect how fast paper will burn when placed under a magnifying glass?

All of these students will represent WFE at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Science Fair on Saturday, May 7, 2011.
On Thursday, April 7, 2011 nearly 200 students Kindergarten – 5th grade participated in the William Floyd Elementary Science Fair.

The students did an amazing job creating a problem, forming a hypothesis, developing a procedure, making observations and tracking data. Every student was asked to follow the Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Science Fair criteria so each project would qualify. The winners are…
