Tangier Smith Elementary School, in partnership with Adventureland’s Helping Hands Foundation, has supported a scholarship for a graduating senior for the past several years.
Each year, students participate in a special “Dollar for Scholars” event and raise money for a graduating senior who attended Tangier Smith Elementary School during his or her academic career, which is then matched dollar-for-dollar by the Helping Hands Foundation. This year, students raised $700 by walking around the track during College & Career Awareness Week in April. Their efforts, thanks in part to the Helping Hands Foundation, have resulted in a $1,400 scholarship for this year’s recipient, Keith Winfrey, Class of 2019.
Winfrey, a former standout student-athlete who is in his first season playing football with the Stony Brook Seawolves, was not able to attend the scholarship ceremony due to a football commitment. Karla Elarde, Keith’s fourth-grade teacher, had the honor of accepting the scholarship on his behalf. “Congratulations to our Tangier Smith students for all of their efforts to help one of our own start his college career!” said Ms. Elarde.
