Moriches Elementary School, in collaboration with the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library, recently held part two of their second annual “Summer Reading on the Lawn” event, a fun and educational reading program in which school personnel read to children while they enjoy refreshments in a laid-back atmosphere.
Moriches Elementary School principal, Deirdre Redding, assistant principal, Nikki Stallone, along with more than 35 members of the Moriches faculty, and Richard Mugno, William Floyd CSE chairperson, and his certified therapy dog “Whill,” were also on hand to read or in Whill’s case, listen.
“We are so excited to continually provide these two fun mornings over the summer to our school community as a means to gather together and listen to stories,” said Mrs. Redding.
The program, with assistance from the Community Library who attended with their reading van and tent, also offered students the opportunity to register for their own library card and take a book home with them.
“The love of reading begins at a young age and what better way to foster that than by providing access to countless genres and titles based on individual interest and passion,” added Mrs. Redding. “It is also great that students have access to books at their reading level as well as the incredible librarians to assist in book selections.”
Moriches Elementary School will also be hosting their annual “Popsicles with the Principals” day on Wednesday, August 28, from 9 am to 11 am, in which students can take a tour of the building and drop off school supplies in their classroom. Immediately following the walkthrough, the students will have the opportunity to join Mrs. Redding and Mrs. Stallone for popsicles at the Moriches playground and field for the chance to catch up with some old friends and meet some new ones!
