To show their love for Kyle Horstmann, a beloved husband, father and William Floyd Elementary School parent volunteer who passed away last year from colon cancer, the school community recently hosted its second “A Mile for Kyle” walk around the school property to raise money for the Children’s Bereavement Center at Long Island Community Hospital. This year, similar to last year, the school raised more than $1,900, which will go toward funding programs to help children deal with the loss of a loved one. The two-year total is now approaching $4,000.
For this event, students in each grade level dressed in the garb of their favorite superhero and walked around the perimeter of the school field four times, which equals approximately one mile.
“The event and support mean so much to me and my family because when you experience such a terrible loss it’s your family and friends who can help you remember that amazing things can come from loss,” said Nicolle Hortsmann, Kyle’s wife. Nicolle and Kyle’s children, Olivia, a fifth grader, and Zachary, a kindergartner, both attend William Floyd Elementary School and participated in the walk.
