Four William Floyd High School Career and Technical Education students were among the top winners at the SkillsUSA Area VI Long Island Regional Competition held in late March at the Suffolk County Community College Brentwood Campus. The students, Makayla Belford, Julia Gomez, Brittney Mayer and Emily Ruddy, each finished in the top two in their competitions, respectively, qualifying them for the SkillsUSA State Leadership Conference in Syracuse, NY, from April 24-26.
In the Senior Cosmetology competition, Julia Gomez won first place and Makayla Belford finished second. In the Medical Assistant competition, seniors Brittney Mayer finished in first place with senior Emily Ruddy taking second.
“These competitions are different in that they are hands on,” said Lee Cillo, CTE chairperson, William Floyd School District. “Each student is given specific instructions and allowed only a certain amount of time to impress the judges with their assigned task. I am proud of all the students that competed but offer special congratulations and best wishes to those who qualified for the state competition.”
Congratulations are also in order for their teachers and teaching assistants: Wendy Joyce, teacher, Cosmetology, and Annie Bopp, teaching assistant, Cosmetology; as well as Jason McKay, teacher, Medical Assisting, and Shaun Harris, teaching assistant, Medical Assisting.
