The William Floyd School District and the William Floyd Alumni Association will celebrate its 11th Distinguished Alumni Day, a special event honoring five graduates who have and continue to be a positive influence in society on Friday, April 5. This year’s honorees have made their marks in the fields of fine arts, law enforcement, education, business and as a humanitarian. They join 49 other honorees before them who have made great contributions to society and whose plaques now adorn the Distinguished Alumni wall at William Floyd High School.
This year’s recipients include Wendy (Murphy) Gross, Class of 1984, education; Kristine (Fafejta) Gawlowski, Class of 1986, humanitarian; John Sumwalt, Class of 1990, law enforcement; Jamie (Oldham) MacPherson, Class of 1995, business; and P.J. Cinque, Class of 2005, music/fine arts.
The honorees will visit William Floyd High School on April 5 for an in-school portion where they will have an opportunity to interact with students whose interests correlate to their occupation or experiences followed by an plaque unveiling ceremony. Distinguished alumni will also have an opportunity to visit the Rita Rech Museum of William Floyd School District History and enjoy lunch catered by the William Floyd High School Career and Techical Education’s culinary arts students under the direction of world-champion ice carver, Rich Daly.
“We have another amazing class of honorees who are truly deserving of this award,” said Kevin M. Coster, Superintendent of Schools, William Floyd School District. “Their accomplishments are a source of pride for our schools and community. Their examples will inspire our students to achieve great things in their lives.”
Past honorees hail from various aspects of society including, business, government, medicine, the sciences, entertainment, literature, the arts, athletics, music, culinary arts, emergency services, law enforcement, philanthropy, education, public and community service and more. The Distinguished Alumni Dinner is scheduled for Friday, April 5, 2019 at 5 pm at The Inn at East Wind in Wading River. Tickets cost $70 per person or $135 per couple. Children five through 12 cost $30 each, with children four and under free. Proceeds from this event help fund many of the William Floyd Alumni Association’s initiatives such as college scholarships, CTE scholarships, STEM projects, community clean-ups, kindergarten supply packets, food drives, holiday adopt-a-family and more.
