The William Floyd Mock Trial team, a perennial powerhouse in the New York State Bar Association Mock Trial Tournament, recently improved to 4-0 on the season with a victory over Half Hollow Hills West High School. With this victory, they have entered the “Sweet 16” qualifiers for the Suffolk County Championship, a single-elimination tournament which will begin on Wednesday, March 13 against Brentwood High School at the Central Islip Courthouse.
Decked out in their traditional red and black, the team has been representing a tenant being unjustly evicted from her apartment in the fictional “Harley Davison v. Gotham City Department of Housing Preservation and Development.” In a season that already includes resounding victories over Half Hollow Hills, Comsewogue, Mattituck and St. Anthony’s, the Mock Trial team is prepping and honing their skills to make another run at the title behind the program’s longtime coach and advisor, William Hennessy.
“This year’s team has been hardworking with a team chemistry that is difficult to achieve in a competitive atmosphere like a mock trial,” said Mr. Hennessy, adding that this year’s squad is a young team with a senior captain, Jonathan Hendry, and many underclassmen including a pair of intrepid ninth-grade witnesses – Hamnah Irfan and Logan Novick. “These students give up their Saturday mornings and two evenings a week to prepare for trial.”
The actual trials are conducted completely by the students. Advisors are forbidden by rule to communicate in any way with team members during the trial. This activity allows students to develop decision-making and leadership skills that will make them more effective adults.
This year’s team consists of the following students: Maille Bowerman, Farihah Chowdhury, Odalys Fuentes, Madison Gray, Jonathan Hendry, Hamnah Irfan, Jenny Le, Gabriella Monte, Logan Novick, Saniyyah Pitner, Dan Potemkin, Randy Quinteros, Dahlia Ramos, Nathalia Reis, Lindsey Wibrew and Neha Yousuf. Legal advisors are George Della Ratta, Keri Joeckel and Stephanie Suarez. Coach: William Hennessy.
William Floyd Mock Trial has quite the legacy winning six New York State titles including back-to-back championships twice (2004-05 and 2013-14), the only team do accomplish that feat even once, along with 13 Suffolk County championships, 11 Regional titles and two NYS second-place finishes, as well as a fourth-, fifth- and sixth-place finish in the state.
Good luck to the Colonials in the tournament!
