Let’s go Wildcats! The extremely popular Disney channel movie High School Musical will be brought to life on stage by the talented students of William Floyd Middle School for three shows beginning on Friday, February 1, followed by two performances on Saturday, February 2.
High School Musical debuted on the Disney Channel in 2006 starring a young Zac Efron and newcomer Vanessa Hudgens. It was an instant hit and has remained popular with “tweens” ever since. Recognizable songs include “Get Your Head in the Game” and “We’re All in This Together.” These and many other favorites brought to life by William Floyd Middle School students will have the audience singing along and cheering as they watch the characters deal with peer and parental pressures as they discover who they really are.
“Whether you are an adult or student, you will identify with the story within this musical in one shape or another, and leave with a smile on your face and a song or two in your head you won’t be able to shake…in a good way!” said Kelly Dechene, who is serving as the director for this production, her third for OCEAN Arts in this age group. Dechene will also be showcasing her directorial skills for the spring performance of Alice in Wonderland at William Paca Middle School. “We have created a family over the last few years,” added Dechene. “Watching the students grow in theatre arts and having the opportunity to play this role in their lives year to year is a gift I am granted each time I return to William Floyd Middle School.”
High School Musical Jr., along with the upcoming productions of Alice in Wonderland at William Paca Middle School, Nice Work If You Can Get It at William Floyd High School and the annual theatre summer camps are the result of an ongoing dynamic partnership between OCEAN Arts, the Community Library Friends of the Arts and the William Floyd School District. “Every year we raise the bar on the quality of shows we produce and the number of kids we engage in the many aspects of a theatre production,” said Kyle Imperatore, artistic director, OCEAN Arts. “We are thrilled to be entering our eighth season, and we hope to continue to grow.”
High School Musical Jr. will be presented at William Floyd Middle School, 630 Moriches-Middle Island Road, Moriches, on Friday, February 1 at 7 pm, and two on Saturday, February 2 at 1 pm and 7 pm.
