William Paca Middle School students kicked off the school year by making a difference in their hallways and classrooms with the implementation of the “Start with Hello” program, an effort to build positivity within their school community by students and staff greeting each other with a “hello” or other positive comment. The idea behind the effort is to create a culture of inclusion and connectedness within their school community through this simple act of acknowledgment and kindness. William Paca Middle School has used this program successfully over the past few years.
New this year at William Paca Middle School is the “Bridge Crew,” a student-led group designed to “bridge the gap” for incoming sixth graders led by seventh- and eighth-grade students who have taken the younger students under their wings to help them get acclimated to their new school. At the beginning of the school year, the Bridge Crew helped sixth graders find their lockers and their classrooms, as well as played an instrumental role in the “Start with Hello” effort. The Bridge Crew plans to organize after-school events throughout the school year to continue that positive school-wide culture of camaraderie, kindness and school involvement.
