Kites and kids, dancing chimney sweeps, colorful costumes and beloved characters will soon take the stage in the OCEAN Arts production of Mary Poppins Jr., starring the talented students of William Floyd Middle School.
Mary Poppins Jr. is based on the beloved 1964 film starring Julie Andrews as the tough but loving Mary Poppins. All of the most popular songs are included, such as “A Spoonful of Sugar” and a huge raucous full ensemble version of “Step in Time.” Mary Poppins Jr. is a brand new release, so William Floyd Middle School is one of the first schools to present this delightful show, which is bound to be one of the most popular titles among middle schools.
Director Kelly Dechene brings her own magic to each production, and creates a wonderful experience for her students, along with musical director Michael Drozd and set builder/assistant Adam Tesoro. “Once again it’s been an amazing privilege to work with the talented students here at WFMS,” said Dechene. “This show is extremely special, not just because it is a childhood classic, but bringing it to the stage and introducing the students to the spirit and magic of Mary Poppins has been the highlight. This production will leave a lasting memory in the hearts of our hardworking cast and crew, as well as delight the audience.”
These middle school productions, the recent production of Cinderella at William Floyd High School and the upcoming annual theater summer camps are the result of an ongoing dynamic partnership between OCEAN Arts, the Community Library Friends of the Arts (FOA) and the William Floyd School District. “We’re very proud that along with the FOA and the school district, we’ve been able to keep musical theater alive in our community, and to continue to expand our programs,” said April Franzino, OCEAN Arts co-executive director.
