The William Floyd High School varsity cheerleading team, under the leadership of head coach Alyssa Cabrera, just took home first place in the first Section XI Cheer Competition of the season held at Longwood High School at the first of seven Section XI competitions of the year.
“Their routine had a lot of difficulty and new stunts we’ve been working on since the summer. Their tumbling and execution has improved tremendously,” said Coach Cabrera. “The overall physical and mental strength that the team has is what really makes me so proud. To go against teams who have been competing nationally and have had solid competitive cheerleading programs for years, and then to go out on that mat and put it all behind them is what amazes me about these athletes.”
Additionally, the cheerleading team is also competing in the “Team Up 4 Community” L.I. Holiday Sports Heroes Video Challenge for their work in raising $1,500 for New York Cancer and Blood Specialists, a cause that is near and dear to their hearts. The Colonials took first place in this competition last year for their work in raising funds and awareness for Rett Syndrome, a victory which brought much needed attention to the rare disease which also resulted in a $3,000 grant for the program.
