Recently, sixth graders at William Floyd Middle School and William Paca Middle School visited Smith Point Beach for an inquiry-based introduction to their sixth grade Earth Science curriculum, which was a wonderful opportunity for them to get hands-on experience in various scientific collection, experiments and more. William Floyd High School teacher Dawna Cintron and her AP Environmental students designed each station and led the students through this interactive field trip through one of the William Floyd community’s many beautiful natural resources.
During their visit, which took place over two days, students focused on observing and analyzing sediment samples, ocean variables, weather, weathering and erosion, water analysis, evidence of animal life, seining, making and observing sundials and more.
William Floyd Middle School students also had the opportunity to become “citizen scientists” for the day through iNaturalist, an online social network used by scientists around the world which allows people to share biodiversity information in an effort to help inform and learn more about nature.
