Students in Brianne Antenucci’s third-grade class at John S. Hobart Elementary School recently had the opportunity to participate in a “Book Tasting” event, which provides students the opportunity to “taste” a variety of literary genres. In this event, “Chef” Antenucci set up her classroom like a restaurant and students made reservations for six different genres of interest. Students were then give between five and 10 minutes at each table to practice independent reading strategies, as well as the opportunity to reflect on what they have read by finding books that were “just right” for them. The “just right” book is one that each student feels is most appropriate for his or her reading level. “The tasting ended with each student discovering a variety of books that they felt comfortable reading and can’t wait to read!” said Mrs. Antenucci.
