Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School recently hosted more than 20 published authors and illustrators for Author/Illustrator Night, in which students, parents and staff had the opportunity to meet and interact with published authors and illustrators, ask questions about their books and the writing process, as well as get their autograph on a special passport containing their biographies. The Nathaniel Woodhull Parent Involvement Committee was instrumental in organizing the event, and the PTO also pitched in and provided dinner for the special guests.
“The evening gave our students a great opportunity to meet and talk with published authors and illustrators who brought their writing to life, which is a wonderful motivator for our students,” said Monica Corona, Principal, Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School.
This event was held the same day as an in-school visit by children’s author Douglas Florian, which was co-sponsored by the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library. Mr. Florian wrote such books as Dinothesaurus, which was named to many best-of-the-year lists; Comets, Stars, the Moon, and Mars, a “Kirkus Reviews” Best Book of the Year and Horn Book Fanfare List selection; and Bowwow Meow Meow, winner of the Gryphon Award and a Parents Magazine Best Book of the Year. Mr. Florian met with all Nathaniel Woodhull students during three assemblies throughout the day. He also paid a visit to students at William Floyd Elementary School.
