William Floyd Elementary School students recently recited the Safety Patrol pledge to help their school maintain a safe environment and act as positive role models to their younger peers. Students were selected for the Safety Patrol based on demonstrating outstanding character and leadership abilities. For this year’s swearing in, the group welcomed back three former Safety Patrol captains including Felicia Morgenstond, Amerida Muniz and Madison Mentz, the 2013-14 New York Safety Patroller of the Year. Serving as this year’s captain is Mikayla Mentz.
Members of the 2016-17 William Floyd Elementary School Safety Patrol also include: Julia Abbaticchio (Staff Sergeant), Abdullah Bhatti, Brenna Brazzel, Christian Burwell, Marissa Caufield, Nakyla Clayton (4th grade), Daniel DaSilva (Squad Sergeant), Matthew Goslin (4th grade), John Gunning, Nicholas Hristidis, Maggie Hua (1st Lieutanant), Karen Jackson, Andrew Jozwicki (Supply Sergeant), Sophia Juan, Riley Lutz, Aidan Monahan, Joseph Pedra, Cindy Quito, Kaila Weissbach and Ava Winter.
The AAA School Safety Patrol program began in 1920 and consists of more than 500,000 members in more than 50,000 schools throughout North America. Former Safety Patrol members include U.S. Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden; Nobel Prize-winning economist Gary S. Becker; Supreme Court Justices Warren E. Burger, Anthony M. Kennedy, Stephen G. Breyer, Clarence Thomas and William J. Brennan Jr.; baseball Hall of Famers Tom Seaver, Al Kaline and Joe Garagiola; 21 astronauts including Mary Ellen Weber; Olympic gold medalist Lynette Woodard (basketball); Diane Steed, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and much more.
