William Paca Middle School held its first annual Pi Day “Pie a Faculty Member” event where students had the opportunity to purchase a ticket to throw a whipped cream pie (a plate of whipped cream) into the face of their favorite teacher to support the Math Olympiads Club. The organizers of the event, math teachers Kevin Durant, Rob Acierno and Tom Sicari, enlisted fellow teachers to volunteer to support the Math Olympiads Club. After a brief lesson on Pi by eighth grader Andrew Maiorini, the Pi Day festivities began.
In addition to Mr. Acierno, Mr. Durant and Mr. Sicari getting pied, several other teachers participated including Marco Antenucci, Joseph Coleman, Joseph Cordaro, Jessica Hernandez, Paula Kluse, Paula Malguarnera, Karla Maroney, Michael Murray, Jessica Ragazzi and Brian Midwinter who was pied by members of the girls varsity lacrosse team.
Pi Day is celebrated each year on March 14 and Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant – the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter – which is approximately 3.14.
