Sensei John Del Vecchio, a William Floyd High School graduate (class of 1986) and proprietor of North East Martial Arts in Mastic, has been volunteering his time to work with William Floyd Middle School students after school in a general martial arts class.
Specializing in the Okinawan Isshinryu karate, Sensei Del Vecchio has been introducing concepts that focus on self-defense, self-awareness and increased attention span. Holding classes two times per week in the auxiliary gym, students have been learning self-defense techniques including kicks, strikes and rolls. “My goal is to help them stay focused, be aware of their surroundings and have confidence in themselves.”
In the month since this program started, Sensei Del Vecchio has worked with anywhere between 10 and 20 students in each class, some whom have trained with him before in his studio.
Additionally, Sensei Del Vecchio plans to hold classes for students at William Paca Middle School in the near future and recently volunteered his time to work with students and families at Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School’s first “Family Fitness Night.”
North East Martial Arts classes focus on promoting positive well-being based on the principles of respect, honesty, integrity and discipline within a fun and rewarding environment. For more information about Sensei Del Vecchio and North East Martial Arts, please log onto www.nemalongisland.com.
