The William Floyd High School Business Department has been awarded the New York State Department of the Year Award for the Nassau/Suffolk County Region. This is the 3rd time the Department has received this award. In the William Floyd School District, the Business Education course opportunities are available to all students in grades 9 through 12. Business Education courses assist in preparing students to enter post-secondary education and/or career level employment in the 21st century. Academic skills and concepts are integrated into each course curriculum and are illustrated through the utilization of "hands-on" instruction.

English Language Arts Department

The English Department in the William Floyd School District provides basic language skills and competencies in an integrated program of study. Our students can complete a 5 year high school sequence using a full year elective in Mass Media or Children's Literature. Our students work in fully equipped computerized Writing Centers to publish work including anthologies of various short genres, newspapers, annotated bibliographies, research papers, diaries and journals. Advanced Placement Literature is offered to qualified seniors.

The LOTE Department in the William Floyd School District believes that communication drives the human experience in our Global Society. Our department promotes students to :
- Communicate successfully in a multicultural society.
- Delve into the respective cultures of target language being studied.
- Use critical thinking skills.
- May challenge the Advanced Placement examinations at the completion of five (5) years of study.

Our Health Education Department offers a curriculum for all 6th and 8th grade, and again in the high school. The sixth grade curriculum presents information on personal health and safety. The eight graders will be presented on information on developing healthy relationship and healthy choices. At the high school, we cover human sexuality, drug and alcohol education as well as peer pressure and decision making skills.

The William Floyd School District maintains a comprehensive mathematics program for all students designed to meet their individual needs. William Floyd students' scores on all state-mandated Competency and Regents examinations have been consistently at or above state and county levels. High school students are required to complete 3 credits in mathematics before graduation.

NJROTC

The NJROTC accredited curriculum emphasizes citizenship and leadership development, as well as our maritime heritage, the significance of sea power, and naval topics such as the fundamentals of naval operations, seamanship, navigation and meteorology. Classroom instruction is augmented throughout the year by extra-curricular activities of community service, academic, athletic, drill and orienteering competitions, field meets, flights, visits to naval or other activities, sports training, and physical fitness training.

The William Floyd School District offers its students the opportunity to excel in Science through a comprehensive course of study including advanced placement courses in Biology and Chemistry and elective courses in Astronomy and Topics in Science. Those students who have been identified as having above average ability and interest in Science are offered accelerated science programs beginning in the eighth grade with Regents Earth Science. In grades nine through twelve, all students have the opportunity to complete the New York State Regents Syllabi in Chemistry, Living Environment, and Physics, as well as Advanced Placement Biology and Chemistry.

The William Floyd School District Social Studies Department recognizes the importance of preparing students for their roles as U.S. citizens in a complex, multicultural, and increasingly globally interdependent world. Courses are offered based on concepts and skills which are necessary to develop an understanding of political, social and economic events that have shaped the United States and the world. For highly capable and qualified students, the Social Studies Department also offers challenging Advanced Placement courses in European History, United States History, Economics and United States Government and Politics.

Technology Education Department

Technology education is an integral program of study within the MST Learning Standards. Although technology education programs offer students many opportunities to apply their mathematics and science skills, programs at the high school level offer additional opportunities to explore technology-related careers under the Career and Technical Education umbrella. At the intermediate level technology education is a required unit of study to be completed by the end of 8th grade.
